San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter at overcapacity

SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter (SMRAS) is overcapacity, and is asking local residents to help create space by fostering and adopting.

According to SMRAS, since March 1, 2022, the shelter has taken in a total of 820 animals and are currently short of 30 kennels for their dogs.

“We have way too many dogs in pop-up kennels around the shelter and we need help. With animals still incoming into our shelter we will be forced to make some very difficult decision next week,” Sydney Bonnin, Animal Services Program Coordinator said in an email.

SMRAS is currently the only animal shelter for Hays County, and also reached maximum capacity last month. According to their March 2022 Statistics Report, they have had 929 live intakes since the beginning of this year.

“We are in a desperate situation and we are seeking help from our community,” said Bonnin.

Most adoptions include a $97 fee, and adopters must show a valid I.D. and be 18 or older. Being a resident of Hays County is not required. All adoptable animals have had a medical examination, updated vaccinations, microchips and been spayed or neutered.

“The only way we can get through tough times like this is if we do so together,” said Bonnin.

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter provided a list of 11 dogs who are in dire need of fostering.
