The Texas Department of Transportation will temporarily close I-35 at William Cannon Drive in alternating directions Monday through Thursday nights, while crews use cranes to lift and place large beams for a new William Cannon Drive north-to-south U-turn bridge. During the closures traffic will be detoured to the frontage road (see attached detour map).
The closures will affect southbound drivers on Monday and Tuesday nights, Sept. 10-11, and northbound motorists on Wednesday and Thursday nights, Sept. 12-13 between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., weather permitting.
In addition, one lane in the opposite direction will be closed on I-35 while the beams are being set. During this phase of work, the William Cannon Drive bridge will close to traffic each night at 8 p.m. All I-35 mainlanes and William Cannon Drive will reopen daily.
Drivers wishing to cross I-35 at William Cannon Drive during the closure will be detoured south to Slaughter Lane or north to Stassney Lane. Drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes as delays are expected.
Road signs have been placed to alert drivers of the upcoming closures. TxDOT asks the traveling public to be patient, adhere to construction signage, and remain aware when traveling through the work zone.
Upon completion of the William Cannon Drive bridge, the project will move into its third and final phase. Upcoming work will include the demolition of the Stassney Lane bridge this winter.
The I-35 from Stassney Lane to William Cannon Drive project will enhance mobility, safety, and connectivity for all modes of transportation.
Improvements include upgraded entrance/exit ramps, reconstructed bridges at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive, added U-turn lanes, and improved bicycle and pedestrian accommodations. Work on the $79 million project is expected to be complete in winter 2019/2020.
