“Turkeys Tackling Hunger” In San Marcos

San Marcos –  One in seven Hays county residents don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and Hays County Food Bank’s “Turkeys Tackling Hunger” aims to give to those in need.

Volunteers are preparing for the campaign’s tenth year with one goal in mind: to ensure that each and every Hays county resident can enjoy the comfort of a holiday meal prepared at home.

Between September and November, “Turkeys Tackling Hunger” brings together individuals and organizations in the community to collect food, raise funds, assemble the boxes of food, and distribute meals to those in need.

One of the businesses sponsoring the event is Little Guys Movers. Established in San Marcos in 1997, the local moving company has helped out with “Turkeys Tackling Hunger” for the past seven years.

This year, Little Guys will deliver thousands of meals to designated pick-up locations and families across the county from November 14-19th.

Josh Paselk, branch manager for the Little Guys Movers San Marcos location since 2013, recalls that his family would spend Thanksgiving holidays helping feed the hungry when he was growing up in El Paso.

“Our ongoing partnership with the Food Bank to serve others feels like home to me,” Paselk says. “It represents who we are as a company and what we strive to be every day: an asset to this community and a resource for the people who live here. We’ll always work hard to help out however we can.”

Each year this campaign serves up thousands of holiday meals to low-income families.

A $30 donation provides a family with one holiday meal box that includes turkey or ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, corn, sweet potatoes, walnuts, and apple sauce.

In 2015 the campaign served 2,951 families, and this year’s campaign hopes to fill the needs of over 3,300 families.

Anyone can help the initiative by donating food or funds, and those in need can sign up to receive a meal at the food bank, its partner agencies, or with any of the school districts in Hays County. For more information, visit https://www.haysfoodbank.org/
