SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State head football coach Everett Withers announced Wednesday that associate head coach John Wiley has resigned his position with the school. Wiley, who also coached inside linebackers, joined Texas State’s staff last January.
“John is resigning for personal/family reasons and we will respect and support his decision,” Withers said. “We are in the process of interviewing and completing the search to replace him and expect to have a coach in place in the very near future. No future comments will be made on the resignation of Coach Wiley.”
Wiley came to Texas State after serving six seasons in a similar capacity at East Carolina, where he helped guide the Pirates to four bowl games and transform ECU’s defense into one of the nation’s top 40 units.
He went to East Carolina after an illustrious stint as a defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Appalachian State for 19 years (1993-2009). There, he was the architect of the Mountaineer defense that played a key role in the Mountaineers winning three FCS National Championships and seven conference championships. Appalachian State also appeared in the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs 12 times and Wiley coached seven All-American defensive backs and 30 All-Conference secondary players.
Wiley began his coaching career as a defensive backs coach at Texas in 1987 when he helped guide the Longhorns to a Bluebonnet Bowl appearance.
He also was a defensive backs coach at Appalachian State in 1989 and 1990 before serving as a defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Iowa Wesleyan in 1991 and at Valdosta State in 1992. Iowa Wesleyan was ranked as high as No. 5 in the NAIA poll and advanced to the national playoffs. Valdosta State finished 1992 ranked among the Top 20 NCAA Division II teams.
Wiley started coaching after graduating from East Texas State in 1984. He also was a three-year letterman for the Lions and was part of East Texas State’s 1983 Lone Star Conference championship team.
