Citizen Tips Help SMPD Solve Fatal Hit And Run

Due in major part to citizen tips, the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) has been able to identify and arrest the suspected driver involved in the June 1 fatal hit and run incident.

Brenda Vasquez Hurtado (DOB 11/27/78) of San Marcos surrendered herself to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office on June 15 following an arrest warrant issued on June 10 by Justice of the Peace Maggie Moreno.

Hurtado was identified as the driver of a Ford Explorer Sport Trac when it struck Dwight Garrett Thomas on Post Road.

Thomas died hours after the accident while receiving medical care at Ascension Seton Hays Hospital in Kyle. The vehicle is registered to Hurtado’s sister.

Hurtado has been charged with Accident Involving Death, a second-degree felony. Bond has been set at $100,000.00.

The SMPD would like to thank the public for numerous tips that came in after the initial press release that aided in the outcome of this case.
