SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) has reported twice the amount of thefts from motor vehicles in January compared to previous years.

Since the beginning 2022, there have been 27 reports of theft from motor vehicles in San Marcos. According to SMPD, the normal range at this time of the year is between 7 and 11.

The red dots on the map below show where these crimes have been reported. While thieves have been targeting vehicles along the I-35 corridor, residents and visitors in all areas of the city can take simple steps to help protect their belongings.

SMPD recommends that residents always lock their vehicles and take their keys. Never store a second set of keys in your car. Additionally, never leave a vehicle running or unattended and park in well-lit areas.

The department recommends keeping valuables or documents with important personal details out of sight or taking them with you when you get out of your vehicle. SMPD also recommends installing anti-theft devices or alarms.

If someone does break into your car, a report can be made online at sanmarcostx.gov/policereport. The service is also available for other crimes, including identity theft and vandalism.
