TMC Exceeds National And State Averages In CDC’S mPINC Survey
San Marcos Hospital Scores Well On Infant Feeding Practice Survey
The Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) Women’s Center scored above the state national averages in the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPinc) survey for 2013.
“We’re very proud of our results,” said CTMC Director of Women’s Services Margie Lieck. “CTMC attributes these high scores with several factors. We offer breastfeeding consultation 7 days a week, 8 hours a day, because we believe in devoting time and education for breastfeeding. Also, our nursing babies are placed skin to skin with their mother within the first 30 minutes of life for an instant start. We’re also fortunate to have the commitment of our neonatologists and obstetricians who support the breastfeeding process.”
CTMC scored 96 out of 100 in the mPinc benchmark report – significantly above the national average of 75 and the state average of 73. Institutions were scored in the following categories:
- Labor and Delivery Care
- Postpartum Care
- Facility Discharge Care
- Structural and Organizational Aspects of Care Delivery
- Staff Training
“As one of the 2,666 facilities that responded to the mPINC Survey, CTMC’s participation demonstrates commitment to continuous quality improvement,” said Laurence M. Grummer-Strawn, MPA, MA, PhD, the CDC Nutrition Branch chief.
The mPINC Survey is a national survey of infant feeding practices in maternity care settings. Every two years, all U.S. hospitals that provide maternity services and free-standing birth centers are invited to participate. For 2013, 83 percent of national facilities responded to the mPINC Survey.
