SH 71 Improvement Project In Southwest Austin Complete

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Transportation’s improvement project to address congestion, improve mobility and enhance safety on State Highway 71 in the rapidly-growing area of southwest Austin is now complete.

SH 71 between Southwest Parkway and US 290 in Oak Hill now has five travel lanes, two in each direction and a continuous left-turn lane in the center, as well as eight-foot shoulders.

Work on the project included expanding the center-turn lane where driveways were present within the project limits, as well as several other safety improvements like widening shoulders, raising the level of the roadway, and adding a traffic signal at Southwest Parkway. Crews also constructed dual left-turn lanes from SH 71 to Southwest Parkway.

“TxDOT is dedicated to ensuring drivers can travel safely and efficiently on our roadways each and every day and this project helped us to accomplish that goal,” said Victor Vargas, TxDOT area engineer. “I am happy that this important improvement project is now complete and open for motorists to enjoy.”

The contractor for the $15.9 million project that began in summer 2014 was Joe Bland Construction, L.P.
