Hays County Commissioners Court Proclaims 4-H Week In Hays County

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court Tuesday proclaimed the week of October 7-13 as 4-H Week in Hays County.

During this week, 4-H clubs from across Texas take part in activities to help their communities.

“We try to help communities every day,” Hays County AgriLife Extension Agent Jason Mangold told the Court. “But during 4-H Week, clubs from across Texas plan and conduct activities as part of a coordinated effort, and our 430 Hays County 4-H members and 90 volunteers will be involved.”

East San Marcos 4-H Club member Joseph Niño, one of this year’s three Gold Star 4-H award recipients from Hays County, told the Court that 4-H has helped him learn numerous skills, including the ability to speak in front of a group such as the Court. Niño is in his ninth year of 4-H.

“4-H isn’t just about raising and showing animals, there are options such as robotics, public speaking and many other opportunities,” he said.

Buda 4-H member Konleigh Eben and Wimberley 4-H member Tyler Strobel are also Gold Star winners and have both spent eight years in the program.

The Gold Star is the highest 4-H award at the county level and is determined by completion of an application, record book, and an interview, according to AgriLife Extension Agent Kate Blankenship.

To attain Gold Star status, the winners have submitted record books, completed activities in livestock, swine quiz bowl, shooting sports, and District events.

This year’s recipients have also exhibited leadership skills while serving as club officers. They have worked on community service projects and motivated others through participation in numerous 4-H activities such as District Leadership Lab and State 4-H Roundup.
