On Monday, April 25, 2022, at approximately 1:38 a.m., the San Marcos Police Department (SMPD) responded to I-35 near the 210-mile marker regarding a vehicle collision. Emergency crews arrived on the scene and discovered a white Chevrolet truck on its roof in the southbound lanes.

Rodolfo Lopez Jr. was arrested for Intoxication Manslaughter and Accident Involving Causing Death. Photo attributed to the Hays County Jail Records.

After the truck came to a rest on its roof, initial reports from police show the driver of the truck fled the scene on foot. The truck was then struck by a grey Honda Accord. That collision caused the Honda to leave the roadway and strike a large highway sign.

The sole occupant of the Honda, identified as 54-year-old Myron Liggins of Converse, TX, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Hays County Justice of the Peace Jo Anne Prado.

A second sedan was also involved in the collision. The driver of that vehicle did not suffer any injuries.

Officers utilized a drone to search the area surrounding the crash for the driver of the Chevrolet truck. The driver, 34-year-old Rodolfo Lopez Jr. of Buda, TX, was located in a nearby parking lot and taken into custody by SMPD without incident. Lopez was arrested and has been charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and Accident Involving Causing Death.

I-35 was closed for approximately five and a half hours while the San Marcos Police Department Collision Investigation Team investigated and cleared the scene.

This is the seventh fatal crash investigated by San Marcos Police in 2022. At the time of publication, Lopez is still booked in the Hays County Jail with a bond set at $75,000.
