Songwriters Hogan & Moss Come To The Library

Lockhart — Dr. Eugene Clark Library’s Evenings with the Songwriter presents Hogan & Moss on Tuesday, September 24, 7:00 PM.

Hosted by Lockhart songwriter Fletcher Clark, this monthly series at the historic library (now in its ninth season) is free to the public on the last Tuesday of the month (except December).

Based in Houston, Jon Hogan and Maria Moss have toured Texas and the Western U.S. full-time for more than a decade, playing more than 250 shows, house concerts and teaching events annually.

Their shows range from high-energy full-band dance celebrations with the Old Weird America band on bass, drums, mandolin, lap steel, and fiddle, to house-concert duo and trio performances with upright bass. In 2016 they toured in Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands.

In 2018, Jon and Maria were selected as Facilitating Songwriters/Artists in Residence in a national music engagement and research initiative funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Throughout the year, they work with nonprofit foundations to bring music performance, music history, and the craft of songwriting to classrooms and communities. They also give talks on the enduring power and mystery of the music of the Carter Family and other old-time artists.

Music writer Joe Nick Patoski characterized them as the hardest working duo in Texas,” says Fletcher Clark, “and I have enjoyed them often at our Camp Inertia at the Kerrville Folk Festival.” The Missoula Independent said, “It’s as though if you touched them they might electrocute you.”

Evenings with the Songwriter has featured scores of celebrated artists: Caroline Aiken, Jon Ims, Shake Russell, Tish Hinojosa, Vince Bell, Butch Hancock, Christine Albert, Dana Cooper, Susan Gibson, Rex Foster, Eric Taylor, Shelley King, Ken Gaines, Karen Mal, and Walt Wilkins. Producer Clark says, “This is not strictly a performance nor an interview nor a song swap nor a lecture — we explore ‘the art and craft of songwriting’.” The ambiance of the Dr. Eugene Clark Library Lyceum, the oldest continually operating library building in Texas, provides this unique venue for Evenings with the Songwriter, enjoyed by audience and guests alike. This ninth season continues with Jeff Talmadge and Jack Pledge.

The series is presented to the public free of charge on the last Tuesday of the month (except December), thanks to City of Lockhart Library Director Bertha Martinez and her staff.

Support comes from local Friends of the Song sponsors Todd Blomerth & Patti Payne, Donaly & Clare Brice, and Robert & Esther Wilson.
