Animal Shelter Offers Tips for Finding Lost Pets

Summer is a busy season for the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter, and shelter managers want to remind residents to properly identify their pets in case they become lost.

“It is our busy season with animals coming in and we are filling up daily,” said Erin McCann, Animal Shelter Supervisor. “So many of these animals are clearly friendly and owned animals but have no identification for us to get them back home.”

The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter offers tips for finding pets if they become lost:

  • Make sure your pets are properly identified in the first place—rabies vaccination tags, City license tags and microchips allow residents and animal control officials to contact you if they find your pet. The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter offers walk-in microchipping of pets for $20 during business hours.
  • Keep contact information up to date
  • Search your property very carefully
  • Walk your neighborhood
  • Visit your local animal control facility or animal shelter in person to look for your pet
  • File a lost pet report with the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter at www.sanmarcostx.gov/lostpet

When you have found your pet, be sure to collect any flyers or posters you have put out, and notify any animal control agencies you contacted that your pet has been returned.
