Future of Capes Dam up to Hays County and City of San Marcos

On Tuesday, June 1, the Hays County Commissioner’s Court met to execute an Interlocal Agreement and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Hays County and the City of San Marcos related to the Capes Dam Complex. On May 18 the San Marcos City Council voted to approve the MOU with the county, and the commissioner’s court voted in agreement during their recent meeting.
The intention of the agreement is for the city and county to work together to find a solution for the Cape’s Dam natural area and accommodate public safety, environmental conservation, public safety, historic preservation, and public recreation.
Commissioner Debbie Ingalsbe said the court will exercise due diligence to see if the dam can be rehabilitated or if removal is necessary.
“We want to ensure that everybody is at the table with this discussion,” said Ingalsbe. “This discussion has been had for many years as we all know. It has divided our community unfortunately and we really need to come together and work together and provide that unity that (Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra) spoke about earlier.”
The Hays County Commissioner’s Court voted unanimously to agree to the interlocal agreement, and begin working towards determining the future of Capes Dam.
