What You Need To Know About Construction Of I35, RM 150, Blanco River And South Austin

While construction is tough on everyone, TxDOT is trying to do everything they can to minimize disruptions. TxDOT knows you’ve got to get where you need to go.

The intersection of FM 3406 and the I-35 frontage roads are being improved, and the FM 3406 bridge over I-35 is being reconstructed. 

PROJECT ACTIVITY

Closures are weather permitting and updated on Tuesday and Fridays.

  • Southbound I-35 reduced to one lane under FM 3406 bridge
  • Nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Sunday, June 25 until Thursday, June 29

FUNDING

  • Construction cost: $12.4 million

SCHEDULE

  • Construction start: March 2017
  • Anticipated construction completion: Spring 2019, weather permitting

Improvements include the reconstruction of the Oltorf Street bridge, improving entrance/exit ramps and frontage roads, constructing new extended entrance/exit lanes for mainlanes and ramps, and adding U-turns in both directions at Oltorf Street. Bicycle and pedestrian enhancements will also be made along the I-35 frontage roads in each direction within the project limits.

  • Multiple closures northbound I-35 frontage road between Woodward St and the next entrance ramp
  • Daily from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 5 through Friday, July 7
  • Southbound I-35 frontage road left lane closed between Oltorf St and Woodward St exit ramp
  • 9 a.m. Thursday, July 6 to 3 p.m. Friday, July 7
  • Southbound I-35 frontage road left lane closed approaching the entrance ramp near St. Edwards Dr
  • 8 p.m. Thursday, July 6 to 5 a.m. Friday, July 7
  • Alternating lane closures on Oltorf St in both directions across I-35
  • Nightly from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday July 5 and Thursday July

CONSTRUCTION PHASING:

° Widen northbound and southbound I-35 mainlanes for extended entrance/exit lanes

° Begin northbound frontage road and Oltorf Street entrance ramp improvements

  • Phase 2:

°Reconstruct Oltorf Street bridge and add new U-turns

° Construct southbound entrance and exit ramps south of Oltorf Street

° Southbound frontage road improvements

  • Phase 4:

° Construct southbound entrance ramp north of Oltorf Street

I – 3 5   F R O M   S T A S S N E Y   L A N E   T O   W I L L I A M   C A N N O N   D R I V E

The project will reconstruct the bridge structures at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive, as well as the frontage road bridge over Williamson Creek. New U-turn bridges will be added in both directions at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive, and the I-35 mainlanes will be widened to incorporate shoulders and extended entrance/exit lanes to allow for better merging. Bicycle and pedestrian enhancements are also being made, and new safety lighting is being installed.   • Southbound I-35 frontage road left lane closed between Shelby Ln and Stassney Ln
  • Nightly from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday July 5 and Thursday July 6
  • I-35 left lane closed in both directions between Slaughter Ln and US 290/SH 71. Northbound closed 9 a.m. until 5 a.m. and southbound closed 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.
  • Nightly Wednesday, July 5 and Thursday, July 6
  • Northbound I-35 frontage road right lane closed between Stassney Ln and Williamson Creek
  • 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Friday, July 7
  • Westbound William Cannon right lane closed approaching I-35
  • 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 5

Frontage road paving northbound and southbound I-35 from SH 45 North to Rundberg Lane.

  • Closures are weather permitting and updated on Tuesday and Fridays.
  • Northbound I-35 frontage road left lane closed between Braker Ln and Howard Ln. Locations will change nightly. Exits 244 and 245 will close as needed. Use other exits.
  • Nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 5 and Thursday, July 7


I – 3 5  F R O M  R M  1 5 0  T O  B L A N C O  R I V E R

One new ramp will be added and five existing ramps will be modified between RM 150 and the Blanco River.

  • Watch for work near the southbound I-35 frontage road shoulder between FM 150
  • Daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 5 through Friday, July 7

Closures are weather permitting and updated on Tuesday and Fridays.

  • Southbound I-35 frontage road left lane closed between South St and CR 208 south of RM 150
  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 5 to 7 a.m. Thursday, July 6
  • Southbound I-35 right lane closed between Burleson St and Old US 81 South. The new exit for Yarrington Rd will open Friday morning, and the old exit north of FM 150 will close.
  • Nightly from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 5 and Thursday, July 6
