SAN ANTONIO –
A brace by Kaylee Davis propelled the Texas State soccer team to a 3-0 victory Saturday evening over Incarnate Word at Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium.

For roughly the first 20 minutes of the match the Bobcats were adjusting to playing on the turf field while battling a tough Cardinal team. The first breakthrough for TXST came early in the 21st minute when Davis beat a defender one-on-one and then slotted the ball past the goalkeeper into the lower right corner.

Just over a minute later, Davis laid off a short pass to Paige Crossman just inside the penalty box. The freshman then sent a shot past the keeper that hit off the bottom of the crossbar and into the left side netting to increase the lead to 2-0.

The third and final goal of the contest came late in the 31st minute. Kayla Geren tapped the ball to Mackenzie Smith, who sent a through ball down the middle of the field. Davis sent a shot into the back of the net to increase the advantage to 3-0 and record her second tally of the day.

While the second half was scoreless, both teams attempted six shots and put three on goal. All three of UIW’s attempts on frame were easily handled by Heather Martin.

Davis nearly posted a hat trick when she outraced a defender to the ball. The goalkeeper came out and forced the Allen, Texas wide but left the goal wide open. Davis was able to get around the keeper and took a crack at goal but a Cardinal defender was able to get back and kick the ball away.

The other two shots on frame came from freshmen Ally Kewish and Hannah Solano.

Kathryn Budde got the start in goal and made a save while facing four shots in the first 45 minutes. Heather Martin came on at the start of the second half and recorded three saves as the duo combined for the shutout.

Davis led all players with four shot attempts and three shots on goal. Also taking multiple shots in the match for the Bobcats was Solano with three.
