Texas State Bobcats Downs Mountaineers

San Marcos, Texas – Sophomore Kaylee Davis recorded her second brace of the season as the Texas State soccer team defeated Appalachian State 4-0 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex on Sunday night. It was the Bobcats’ third straight victory, all being shutouts.
On the season, TXST is 6-4-1 overall and 4-1-0 in the Sun Belt Conference while the Mountaineers drop to 2-8-3 on the year and 1-3-1 in conference play. The Bobcats end the weekend second place in the Sun Belt standings, three points behind South Alabama.
TXST came out aggressive to open the match with three great opportunities to score in the first four minutes. First up was Kassi Hormuth late in the 2nd minute when she got behind the defense but her shot went just past the outside of the left post.
A little over 30 seconds later, Brooke Ramsey took a rip from long distance but saw the ball sail slightly past the right post. Davis followed exactly a minute late with an attempt of her own that saw an APP defender just get a leg on it to deflect it past the end line for a corner kick.
The Bobcats found their breakthrough early in the 13th minute. Davis drove down the right side and send in a cross. Rachel Grout was able to flick the ball to her left to Alyssa Phelan, who unleashed that beat the goalkeeper to the upper right for 1-0 advantage. The score was Phelan’s first of the season and second of her career, the first coming during the 2015 campaign.
App State nearly tied the match in the 32nd minute when Sarah Moon headed the ball off a free kick towards the left post. Heather Martin made a diving stop to keeper the Mountaineers off the scoreboard.
Nearly two minutes into the second half, Davis almost had her first goal of the contest when she got her head on the ball. The Mountaineers’ Taylor Ray just barely got her finger tips on the ball to keep it from crossing the line.
The Bobcats’ doubled their lead halfway into the 58th minute that began with Davis uncorking a shot that saw Ray make the save but push the ball towards her left. Hormuth was able to beat the defender to the ball and sent a short cross to Grout about five yards out. The Dallas, Texas native unleashed a shot that deflected off the keeper and into the net.
Davis found the back of the net for the first time on the night in the 74th minute that began with Jordan Kondikoff taking a quick free kick. The ball was sent past the defenders and Davis beat them to the ball. In the box, she sent her shot into the left side netting.
In the 80th minute, Davis got the ball near midfield and attacked the defense with only two Mountaineer defenders back. She was able to dribble through and past them to get into the 18-yard box. The sophomore again unleashed a shot past the goalkeeper and into the left side netting again for a 4-0 TXST lead.
Davis almost found herself with a hat trick with under three minutes to play. She used her speed to again beat the defense and was one-on-one with a charging keeper. The Allen, Texas native aimed for the third time to the left side but saw Ray guess right and make a diving stop.
The Bobcats took a season-high 29 shots while App State attempted 16. Davis led all players with a TXST single-game record 12 shots with eight of them being on goal. She now has four goals this season, all coming in SBC play, and recorded her first career assist in a Texas State uniform.
Grout’s goal and assist gave her fourth in both categories. Hormuth was credited with her third assist of the 12th of her career to move her into a tie for ninth in school history with Lynsey Curry (2012-15).
In goal, Martin made five saves to record her third consecutive shutout. She now has 3.5 shutouts for the season and six in her career. The Midlothian, Texas native is now 10 saves shy of recording the 100th of her career as well.
The Bobcats recorded three straight shutouts for the first time since Sept. 6-18, 2015. It was also the first time since Oct. 18-25, 2009 that the team recorded three consecutive shutouts in conference play when the program was a member of the Southland Conference.
Next up for TXST is Louisiana on Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
