Hays County Health Department recognizes third year of pandemic, announces changes to COVID-19 updates

Staff Reports

EDITORIAL NOTE
According to the CDC, the State of Texas and Hays County Public Health all give the same disclaimer on all current counts and totals. “The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a very fluid situation, and it will continue to be. All case numbers and totals are subject to change. As new information becomes available, we will publish those updates.”

Hays County Courthouse, TX – Hays County Local Health Department (HCLHD) reports three (3) COVID-related fatalities since Monday’s update: two San Marcos women in their 90s and a San Marcos woman in her 80s.

The department also reports 36 new lab-confirmed cases along with six (6) new hospitalizations and six (6) new hospital discharges. There are 619 additional persons considered recovered. The total number of persons considered recovered is 50,812.

The current total of lab-confirmed cases for Hays County since the beginning of the pandemic is 52,686. Hays County has 1,388 active cases. Hays County has had 1,666 total COVID-related hospitalizations and eight (8) people are currently hospitalized. Of those, four (4) people (50%) are unvaccinated.

Hays County residents can upload at-home COVID-19 test results to the local health department here: https://arcg.is/1G4P1r. All information is confidential and no identifying information is collected. While these reports will not be included in the official case counts for Hays County, they will provide a better understanding of community spread.

March 13, 2020, is often seen as the date when the COVID-19 global pandemic began. As we enter our third year of reporting, HCLHD will begin providing COVID data a bit differently. Beginning March 16, they plan to send us out weekly updates (on Wednesdays) with the following data:

  • News Cases (past 7-day total)
  • Cases per 100,000 (7-day average)
  • Active cases
  • Hospital admissions (total past 7 days)
  • New hospitalizations per 100,000 (7-day average)
  • Fatalities (past 7 days)
  • 7-day test positivity rate

Reporting COVID data in this manner is more in line with how the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention now calculates whether a community has high, medium, or low transmission. It’s also in a more standardized format for comparability across counties and regions.

Additional information about COVID-19 cases will be available on the Hays County COVID dashboard.
