Gary Job Corps Students Shadow Kyle City Manager, Participate In “A Fresh Start To A Healthier You” Program
Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training.

Shadowing The Kyle City Manager
Gary Job Corps Student Government Association students have shadowed law makers over the past week as part of the National Groundhog Job Shadowing initiative.
The students started out at the Capitol in Austin by shadowing Texas House Representatives Erin Zwiener and Chief of Staff for Representative John Cyrier, MeLissa Nemecek were they were taught the role of the state legislature in the enacting of state laws and how they affect the city and county.
The next shadowing event was of the San Marcos Mayor Jane Hughson were they learned the role of the city, then to the Hays County Chief of Staff Alex Villalobos to Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra, looking at the relationship of the county as it relates to city government.
The culmination of shadowing for the week applied the knowledge acquired to see how it relates to the operation of everyday activities to the citizenry of the cities by shadowing the City Manager of Kyle, Scott Sellers.
Students observed a meeting discussing rain water drain off issues with Perwez Moheet, CPA, Director of Finance, Leon Barton, City manager, Harper Wilder, Public Works Director, Kathy Roecker, Storm water Administration, Brian Lillibridge, Assistant Director Public Works, Scott Egbert, Public Works Street Division Manager, Paige Saenz, City Attorney, and Scott Sellers, City Manager.
“A Fresh Start to a Healthier You”
Texas A&M University Agrilife a Hays County extension is conducting a healthy eating program on the Gary Job Corps Center “A Fresh Start to a Healthier You” is a holistic adult-learning series that uses practical experience and information to help change lives and improve health.
Participants also gain support and understanding from the instructor and other participants while learning how to provide safe, healthy, and economical meals for their families and themselves.
Fresh Start is a 4 week course in nutrition, food safety, meal preparation, and food resource management (budgeting). The Gary Wellness Department provides a HEALS (Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles) were students at-risk for obesity and lack of physical exercise participate.
The partnership between Texas A&M and the Gary Wellness Department will benefit the students and employees on campus.
