On Monday, April 20, 2015, the San Marcos CISD School Board approved Amber Owens as the new principal of Maria Hernandez Elementary School and Richard Duvall as the principal of the Doris Miller Middle School.
Owens, the Assistant Principal at Hernandez, has been serving as the Interim Principal since former Hernandez principal Rosemary Garza assumed the role of principal at the new Bonham Pre-Kindergarten School in February 2015. Owens has experience as an assistant principal for the last seven years at Hernandez and Mendez Elementary schools and at Hernandez when it was an Intermediate School.
Prior to entering administration, she was a third grade teacher and Reading Interventionist with De Zavala Elementary and was a Teacher Development Specialist/Instruction Specialist with the Office of Teaching and Learning –for a total of 12 years with San Marcos CISD. Owens earned her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and Master of Educational Administration from Texas State University.
“I am enthusiastic about the direction of the district,” Owens said. “Serving the students, staff, and parents of Hernandez is rewarding and fulfilling. Each day I strive to make a difference in the lives of children and the community in which we live.”
Duvall has been with San Marcos CISD since 2006, first as a Biology teacher and coach at San Marcos High School, then moving to Goodnight Middle School in 2010 as an assistant principal and eventually associate principal. He was a Biology teacher for 17 years, first in Brazosport ISD and Austin ISD before coming to San Marcos High School. Duvall earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and his Master’s in Education from Texas Southern University.
While a Goodnight Middle School administrator, Duvall was in charge of campus security and safety, textbooks and science curriculum, and the AVID program, among other duties. With 22 years of classroom and athletic field experience and four years in administration, Duvall looks forward to continued growth in the district.
He said, “I support and maintain a strong, ongoing relationship with the students, their parents, faculty and staff, as well as the administration as appropriate within any setting. I bring an intense personal work ethic to be successful in all aspects of the academic setting.”
