HAYS COUNTY — The Hays County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a scam affecting some Hays County residents being sent through text messages.

According to the HCSO, text messages are being sent to people informing them of an outstanding citation in the county.

The sheriff’s office provided an example of what people are receiving, “YOUR NAME HERE, you have an outstanding citation at Hays County Courts at Law, reference number 4635791. Reply HELP for info or STOP to end.”

Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler said that neither the HCSO nor the Hays County Courts would notify residents of outstanding citations, warrants or request payment be made over the phone.

If you feel you have been a victim of a similar scam, please contact the HCSO at 512-393-7896 to make a report.
