SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – The Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) Family Grief Center invites the community to participate in its free support group programs. There are two different support groups that will begin in December.

“The holidays will be soon upon us, and preparing for them can be difficult, especially for those who have suffered a recent loss,” said CTMC Bereavement Coordinator Abel Rodriguez, LMSW, LCDC.

The “Dinner and Grief: Life After Loss” support group program will start its 5-week series on Dec. 1 from 6 to 7:45 p.m., meeting each Monday night through Dec. 29.

Life After Loss is a program designed by the American Cancer Society to help bereaved people better understand the process of their grief and how to live through it in a healing way. It also provides a place for anyone who has lost a loved one or dear friend to share their experiences and to support one another during this trying time. Survivors of non-cancer deaths are also welcome to attend the support group.

Another support group will focus on those who have been affected by a suicide. The “Life After Death by Suicide” support group specializes in helping people cope after a loved one has taken their own life. This 5-week series will begin on Dec. 3 and take place each Wednesday from 6 to 7:45 p.m. through Dec. 31.

At both support groups, dinner is offered as part of the process to recognize the empty chair. There is no cost to the participant.

Both support groups will meet at the CTMC Family Grief Center, located at 1313 IH-35 North in San Marcos. A combination of teaching, discussion and learning activities are used in the groups.
