Kindergardener Earns First 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Card

Kieran Thorne, age 5, is the very first holder of a San Marcos Public Library 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten card to complete his reading goal.

Kieran’s mother, Sherilyn Thorne, has been bringing Kieran to the library since he was a baby, and has read him many more books over the years.

Their achievement of reading 1,000 books together has been accomplished since getting Kieran his card in January of this year. Kieran’s brother Kody, age 6, is also an avid reader.

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide program which encourages families to read 1,000 books with their children before starting Kindergarten.

The concept is simple but the rewards are priceless. Children who are read to frequently from an early age develop the skills they need to succeed in school and be excited about reading and learning.

Library cards are free to all residents of Hays County and all children living within the boundaries of the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District, including children not yet enrolled in school.

With a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten library card you can track your reading with your preschool-aged child and celebrate accomplishments together.

Reading time is fun, free, quality family time, and an easy way to prepare your child for school success. It’s never too early to start reading with your child!
