Local Artist To Host Art Exhibition For International Women’s Day At The Library

Staff Reports

On March 8, the San Marcos Public Library will host an art exhibition to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The exhibition will feature 29 local, women artists and their works in different mediums; the topic of the event will be ‘A Room of One’s Own’ based on the essay by Virginia Woolf.

The event was organized by local artist Debangana Banerjee and librarian, Deborah Carter.

Banerjee said as an artist herself, she wanted to do something on the occasion of International Women’s Day and thought a celebration would be more meaningful if it was done with other local women artists.

“We all create art regularly and we use different mediums,” Banerjee said. “We belong to different age groups and have different cultural backgrounds. This will be a great day to showcase our art together. An important day to show the community how local women artists are thinking, how they are blending their imaginations with their real-world experiences.”

Among the 29 participating artists are ceramic artists, stained glass artists, photographers, videographers, sculptors, textile artists, jewelry designers, printmaker, poets and a musician.

The event will be free and open to the public; the exhibition will be open from 4 PM to 6 PM on March 8. Banerjee will curate the event.

“This time only women artists of the community are going to participate because I feel we should give strength to each other,” Banerjee said. “It will be easier for us to continue our creative practice if [we] get encouragement from our community.”
