Hays County, Local Municipalities Offer Multiple Options For Christmas Tree Recycling

The City of San Marcos Community Enhancement and Resource Recovery Department is offering several ways to discard live Christmas trees as the holiday season wraps up:

• Christmas tree drop off: Starting Dec. 26 through Jan. 12 the public can drop off their Christmas trees at 401 E. Hopkins in the Grant Harris parking lot. Trees of all sizes with no ornaments or tinsel will be mulched on site. Mulch will also be available to residents free of charge.

• Curbside Christmas tree service: Starting Dec. 23 through Jan. 12 any trees up to four feet in height can be bundled with twine and set out on residents’ regular green waste pickup day. The tree must not contain wire, ornaments, or tinsel.

• Green waste cart: Trees may be cut up and placed in green waste carts for pick up. Alternatively, residents may place them in paper yard bags placed next to green waste carts for pickup.

• Brush drop off: The brush drop off will be available Jan. 9 from 8 AM to 1 PM. The brush drop-off will be located by the San Marcos Animal Shelter entrance at 750 River Road.

Wimberley

Hays County Recycling & Solid Waste Transfer Stations will be accepting Christmas trees for recycling at both locations from Tuesday.

December 29, 2015, through Saturday, January 16, 2016 during their regular times, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The stations will be closed December 25-28 and December 31-January 4.

While there is no fee for dropping off the tree, all decorations and lights must be removed. Trees will be mulched and the mulch will be used at Hays County Parks.

Transfer stations are located at 1691 Carney Lane at end of County Road 278 in Wimberley, phone 512-618-7175 and 100 Darden Hill Road (CR 162) in Driftwood (Pct. 4 Yard), phone 512-858-9515.

Kyle

Through January 15, the City of Kyle Parks & Recreation Department has set up “drop-off” areas for recycling Christmas trees. 

NOTE: Dumping of anything in city parks without express written permission is a crime.

Natural Christmas Trees:

All decorations and lights, including tinsel, must be removed. No artificial trees. No nails or screws. No tree bases. The trees will be chipped and used in parks.

The drop-off points are:

Dripping Springs

Dripping Springs area residents can easily recycle their holiday trees with the City of Dripping Springs.

From now through January 10, trees can be dropped off anytime at the concrete slab on the west side of “the triangle” (RR12/U.S. 290).

Residents are asked to please remember to remove all lights, wire, tinsel, decorations, and stands from the trees. Trees with flocking (artificial snow) are not accepted.

The collected trees will be turned into mulch and made available to the public at “the triangle” from January 11 through January 15, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Please bring your own tools and storage containers for loading and transporting the mulch.
