Mermaid Society SMTX Hosts ‘Little Free Library’ Meet Up
Mermaid Society SMTX Co-founders hosted a meet up this week between Todd Bol, Founder of the world-wide, grassroots literacy movement, Little Free Library, and citizens who want to help grow the effort throughout the San Marcos Community. Traveling on the road all the way from Hudson, Wisconsin, it was sheer luck that the group was able to contact him in time to stop in San Marcos on his way to Austin to continue his “Across America with Little Free Library tour.”
“I’m thrilled to be traversing the great state of Texas as a part of our ‘Across America with Little Free Library’ outreach campaign. We’ll be meeting people, co-hosting events, distributing libraries, and promoting a love of reading, while building community with our free book exchanges,” said Bol. “We have more than 400 library stewards in Texas. I want to meet them and engage even more people in our movement.”
Bol shared stories and offered incentives, including matching grant funding, to the group that gathered including, local residents Faith Debow, and Allison Tudor, San Marcos’ first two official registered Little Free Library stewards, respectively. In addition, representing Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos was Rosina Valle, Community Action, Inc. Father Engagement Specialist, David Bryant, Community Organizer and founder of SPLASH-Co-working, Carina Boston Pinales and local artists, Stevie Black and Gigi Mederos, owners and operators of Rio Claro Studio, discussed ways to help grow the program in San Marcos.
“From the collaborating aspect, to the artistic potential, to empowering people to make a difference at a local level, Little Free Library is just the kind of movement Mermaid Society SMTX supports,” said July Moreno, Mermaid Society SMTX founder, who initiated the launch of the Little Free Library movement at Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos last fall. “This kind of creative collaboration is a “win-win” for our community on all fronts,” Moreno added.
