City of Austin receives Distinguished Budget Award for 29th consecutive year
The City of Austin Budget Office has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 29th consecutive year.
This award honors the City for its commitment to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
“I am proud of the work done by our financial staff,” Austin City Manager Marc A. Ott said. “Their efforts to guide the City of Austin and its new City Council through the budget process this year were nothing short of extraordinary and this award acknowledges their best-managed practices.
“We will continue to reach out to our community during this year’s process to ensure the broadest input on our budget,” Ott said. “We are lucky to have intelligent, innovative and dedicated staff as stewards of our City’s finances and this recognition is well deserved.”
The City of Austin’s Fiscal Year 2015-2016 budget was assessed by how well the document serves as:
- A policy document.
- A financial plan.
- An operations guide.
- A communication device.
The budget must be rated proficient in all four categories to receive this award.

The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality, reflecting both the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices on budgeting.
