San Marcos Electric Utility Plans Power Outage

San Marcos Electric Utility will be performing repairs, which will turn off power to several blocks around Downtown SMTX.

Power will be turned off early Sunday morning to several blocks in the Downtown to allow San Marcos Electric Utility (SMEU) crews to repair faulty underground high voltage power cables.

Electricity will be turned off at 3 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 8 and should be turned back on by 12 p.m. that day. The outage affects 115 downtown electric customers, as well as the Local apartment complex and City Park.

Hutchison Street will be partially blocked by electric utility equipment between LBJ and CM Allen Parkway, and traffic signals and streetlights will be out in the affected area. Temporary four-way stop signs will be set up at affected intersections. Drivers should use caution while traveling through the area.

The repair requires electric utility crews to enter underground vaults housing 7200 volt power cables to repair one that failed and to upgrade other power distribution equipment. These cables feed electrical power to Texas State University and several blocks in the Downtown area. The electric utility crews will use their confined space training and equipment during this procedure.

The downtown Fire Station One will not be affected by the planned outage.

SMEU staff will be notifying affected customers of the scheduled outage by phone and door notice.  Information is also being distributed through Main Street and the Downtown Association.
