Social Media Controversy Affects San Marcos Bar

Cash’s Facebook page, which is currently set to private, lists him as an owner at several other bars including the Rooftop on the Square, located in San Marcos.

Unbarlievable, an Austin Circus-themed sports bar on Rainey Street, is under public scrutiny for racist and sexist social media comments allegedly made by the owner.

Last Wednesday, Brandon Cash, owner of Unbarlieable, response to a one-star review went viral on social media.

Cash’s Facebook page, which is currently set to private, lists him as an owner at several other bars including the Rooftop on the Square, located in San Marcos.

While Cash’s alleged response has been removed from the google review, other former patrons have shared screenshots of it on yelp alongside their own experiences at the bar.

In the aftermath of the controversy, new complaints against the establishment have surfaced; one patron’s story, according to the Hate at unBARlievable, says a bartender “brought out beers to an adjacent table in the shape of a swastika.”

The Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission has launched an investigation into the circus-themed sports bar after receiving a complaint on June 18.

Since the controversy, the Roof Top on the Square has received reviews on yelp advising others to avoid the bar and stating the establishment is “owned by a racist.”

On June 30, Cash released the following statement:

“The recent community outrage has been a wake-up call for me personally. I’ve witnessed the overwhelming anger in direct response to my deplorable conduct and I want to assure everyone that I have taken it to heart. To the Austin community embarrassed by my actions and to those individuals I have personally offended, I apologize. I will be making immediate changes to our personal conduct and interactions with our patrons.

Today, I began a very constructive dialogue with community representatives to hear their concerns and take needed steps to make sure my employees and I fully appreciate the gravity of the situation.

As of today, I haven’t been notified by the Texas Alcohol and Beverage Commission about an investigation being reported by local media outlets, but I will of course fully cooperate with all law enforcement agencies.”

The Rooftop on the Square Facebook page has not posted anything since June 9.
