Lower Purgatory Closed Until Further Notice Upper Purgatory Trails Open

Trails in Prospect Park and Upper Purgatory Park are open, but work continues as crews repair the extensive damage caused by last year’s historic flooding.

Lower Purgatory Creek Natural Area remains closed to the public and will remain so until further notice.

Visitors can still expect rough conditions on the open trails and caution should be exercised in all open areas. Open trails can be accessed via the Upper Purgatory parking lot located at 1751 Valencia Way off of Craddock and Wonder World, as well as Prospect Park located at 1412 Prospect Street.

Currently there are no connections from Prospect Park to Purgatory Creek Natural area. The areas under Wonder World and the trail from the Lower Purgatory entrance located at 2102 Hunter Rd have extreme hazards and will take until at least late April to open.

The San Greenbelt Alliance is working in those areas and will be rerouting some trails to bypass the most heavily damaged areas.
City officials also want to remind visitors to stay off of any flood control dams, as they are not part of the City’s parks system and are off limits to the public.

“To assist the City Parks crews and the Green Belt Alliance, please stay out of flood-affected areas until work can be completed,” said Parks Operations Manager Bert Stratemann. “Do not go over or around fences, and please give crews plenty of room to work. We are working as fast as possible to repair the damage from these devastating floods.”

As an alternative to Purgatory Creek Natural, visitors are encouraged to try Spring Lake Preserve, located at 685 Lime Kiln Road, or Ringtail Ridge Natural area, located at 1814 Old Ranch Road 12. There are over 250 acres of beautiful natural area in those parks to explore.

Other Parks still closed by flood damage are Thompsons Island and Capes Camp.

All other City Parks are open although some still have repair work that is needed or underway.
