Vision Van Visits San Marcos CISD Students

Throughout late February and most of March 2017, a total of 292 San Marcos CISD students were seen by the Vision Van that visited their elementary campus.

According to SMCISD teacher Deborrah Gauntlett, 244 students needed glasses and either received a pair of corrective lenses made in the van, or their prescription was sent to a lab for processing and delivery.

The district worked in partnership with Essilor Vision Foundation to bring the Kids Vision for Life mobile van to the elementary schools. It is mobile clinic that brings free vision care—including full eye exams and new prescription eye wear.

According to information provided by Kids Vision for Life:

  • One in four children in the US have a vision problem significant enough to affect learning,
  • 44% of parents are not aware that behavioral problems can be an indication of a child’s impaired vision,
  • 80% of learning in a child’s first 12 years comes through the eyes,
  • 2.5 billion people around the world do not have access to vision correction.

Special thanks go out to SMCISD staff who helped coordinate the mobile clinic’s visit to our schools, and to the Essilor Vision Foundation for providing these valuable services to our children!
