AAC Offers Free Rabies Vaccine And Microchips On April 6

Austin Animal Center is offering free rabies vaccines and microchips for dogs and cats on Saturday, April 6.

The event is open to all Travis County residents. Dogs must be on a leash and cats and puppies must be in carriers

Texas State law requires all pets to be up to date on rabies vaccines in order to keep pets and people safe. 

The vaccine is particularly important in central Texas, as Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in the United States. Bats are one of the primary carriers of the virus. Raccoons, skunks and foxes may also carry the virus.
 
Free microchips will also be offered at the event and are another way to keep your pet safe. One in three pets will get lost in their lifetime and without proper ID, 90% of them won’t return home.

Microchips are the size of a grain of rice and are implanted under the skin. When a lost pet is found, the microchip can be scanned to find the owner’s contact information and return the pet home safely.
