Activity Center set to reopen early spring

SAN MARCOS — The San Marcos Activity Center will reopen from late April to early May after sustaining damages from flooding. The Activity Center closed after a 3-inch poly pipe disconnected from its coupler in October of 2021.

The incident caused several inches of water to cover the ground inside the facility and created months of renovation and various challenges.

Christie Murillo, the administrative coordinator with San Marcos Parks and Recreation, said staff arrived shortly on site after detection of water coming from the building around 3 a.m.

Murillo stated on the city’s Facebook page that the building was flooded and knew it would take time to fix the damage.

“Well obviously everything was saturated,” Murillo said. “We won’t be organizing any events here at the activity center anytime soon.”

While renovations of the facility were taxing enough, the city had to sort out memberships, events and prior classes that were set to occur.

“In addition to, you know, youth programming and senior programming, every day there’s one or several meetings,” Murillo said. “Staff is working to find other recreation options and meeting spaces for the community.”

Staff at the Activity Center have recommended taking advantage of the City’s sidewalks, trails and natural areas while the repairs are being made.

The Activity Center has replaced numerous parts of the facility after flooding caused ample issues. As of Wednesday, March 30, racquetball court walls have been installed, weight room flooring, the repair of the broken pipe and many other completions.

In addition to the completed parts, there are other ongoing and unfinished projects. These projects include repairing racquetball court floors, mark lines on the gymnasium floor and a clear topcoat on all wood flooring.
