Come cheer on our colony of “spell-o-philes” at the Second Annual Adult Spelling Bee benefitting the Friends of the San Marcos Public Library.
This free event starts at 7 p.m., May 2 at Aquabrew Restaurant and Brewery, 150 S. LBJ Drive in San Marcos, and is open to adults 18 years and older.
Team registration is full, but spectators are welcome and can support their favorite teams by purchasing “Re-Buzz” cards to get them back in the game if they’re eliminated from the tournament!
The Bee will be held outside this year to provide more room for both the teams and spectators on the patio.
Fun and fast-paced, this tournament-style spelling bee is a fundraiser organized by the Friends of the San Marcos Public Library, a volunteer organization that supports the library through assistance with purchasing and maintaining high quality books and digital book collections.
The Friends also help with educational programs and advocacy for children, teens and adults in the community.
In the competition, each team has the option to buy their way back into the spelling bee if they misspell a word, with a maximum of two words.
“Participants will receive ‘Stress Bee-lief’ cards at the start of the Bee,” said Public Services Librarian Deborah Carter. “We encourage more audience members or sponsors to purchase Rebuzz cards for a team to re-enter. The first card costs $20, while the second card costs $40.”
Teams may also pass on spelling a word, or “buzz-off” with a limit of two words. The first “buzz-off” card costs $20, the second $40. Judges will award prizes for the best team name and costume.
Aquabrew is a local eatery that features chef-inspired food and offers a unique atmosphere. Food and refreshments are available for purchase and is open to participators and spectators.
