San Marcos’ Inaugural Citywide Lost River Film Festival

An affordable yet astounding assembly of filmmakers & film-lovers next weekend, featuring the very best of over 60 film submissions, the majority from overseas.

Numerous downtown venues collaborating to host four days of impactful indie cinema, workshops, concerts & more!

The San Marcos Cinema Club via generous support from the San Marcos Arts Commission, Planet K, San Marcos Main Street, Grande Communications, AquaBrew & Greater San Marcos Partnership — hosts an affordable yet astounding assembly of filmmakers & film-lovers next weekend, featuring the very best of over 60 film submissions, the majority from overseas.  Additional highlights include these Special Selections:

  • REQUIEM FOR A RUNNING BACK – At the center of controversy presently engulfing the NFL: staggering findings of CTE, a degenerative brain disease in football players that results in rage, social withdrawal & other unusual conduct.  The film follows the family of Lew Carpenter — father of the director as well as San Marcos City Council member Lisa Prewitt — who is diagnosed post-mortem after a career with Vince Lombardi’s championship Green Bay Packers. Winner of 2017 Award of Excellence by Impact Doc Awards. Fri, Nov 3, 7:30 PM at Texas State Performing Arts Center University Recital Hall

  • TOWER – Award-winning, animated retelling of the courage exhibited by ordinary people during the tragic UT Tower massacre fifty years ago: the first American killing spree ever broadcast live on television, prompting creation of the SWAT team. Director Keith Maitland & Ramiro “Ray” Martinez, the off-duty officer who stormed the gunman atop the tower, in attendance. Sat, Nov 4, 6:30 PM at Starplex Theater

  • SIR DOUG & THE GENUINE TEXAS COSMIC GROOVE – Legendary music journalist Joe Nick Patoski, biographer of Selena & Willie Nelson, accompanies his documentary of hippie-cowboy rocker Doug Sahm’s voyage as a musical prodigy: from sparking a riot at his San Anto high school, headlong into the Summer of Love & his eventual formation of Tex-Mex supergroup The Texas Tornadoes. Thur, Nov 2, 7:30 PM at Price Center

  • SOUTHWEST OF SALEM  Chronicles the nightmarish persecution of four Latina lesbians in San Antonio, wrongfully convicted of sexually assaulting two young girls during the Satanic Panic of the 90s. A court ruling last fall, finally exonerating the women of all charges, cited this documentary in its first paragraph. Anna Vasquez, one of the falsely accused San Anto 4, will be on hand for the screening. Sun, Nov 5, 2 PM at LBJ Museum

  • NO NO: A DOCKUMENTARY – Producer Jeffery Brown introduces the film recounting the life of major-league pitcher Dock Ellis — best known for throwing a no-hitter while hallucinating on LSD, but also a flashy figure in pop culture & the struggle for Black empowerment.  Self-dubbed the “Mohammad Ali of Baseball,” Ellis defied white supremacist threats throughout the tumultuous 60s & 70s. Nominated for Grand Jury Prize at 2014 Sundance Film Festival.  Fri, Nov 3, 5 PM at Texas State University Recital Hall

  • WHEN WE BURN OUT – Never-before-seen slacker comedy from Vanessa Pla, up-&-coming apprentice of Richard Linklater, shot at Wonder World Cave: features Lorelei Linklater, star of Oscar-nominated BOYHOOD, & musicians Loulou Ghelichkani (Thievery Corporation) & Christian Bland (Black Angels). Songwriter James Hand, who acts in the film, will perform prior to the Director’s Cut viewing: Fri, Nov 3, 7 PM at Wonder World Cave

  • EVERY NIGHT’S A SATURDAY NIGHT – Brand spanking new documentary on the decades-long saxophone player of the Rolling Stones, a best friend of Keith Richards, & a session player with everyone from Yoko Ono to Marvin Gaye to Harry Nilson & Barbara Streisand. Director Jeff Stacy & Producer Jeffrey Brown on hand for screening. Fri, Nov 3, 2:45 PM at Texas State University Recital Hall
