San Marcos City Cemetery Tales And Tours Features Stone Carver
October 17, 2015, not only will the San Marcos Cemetery be full of compelling stories of former citizens that are being featured this year. Also featured will be a world renowned stone carver doing demonstrations of carving a head stone.
Master Stone carver Cat Quintanilla was born in 1954 in Austin Texas, and earned her Bachelor in fine Art from the University of Texas. Cat now works full time in her Central Texas carving studio producing large and small-scale natural stone sculptures. Her goal is to create playful and engaging sculptures that intellectualize her visually morphed statements that are the nexus of natural forms and abstract thinking. In addition her sculptures have received recognitions in a number of Texas cities. Cat has been honored as an outstanding Texas woman artist and community leader in the Austin History Center 101 VOCES DE LATINAS program.
In reflection of her art Cat has said that “Art…is an opportunity for a shared human experience.
That art even exists is a reflection of society’s respect for the exercise of abstract thinking and is a celebration of the playful, universal and historical appeal of “all things beautiful.”
In addition, some of the actors portraying notables buried in the San Marcos Cemetery are students from the Texas State University Drama Department. Hosted by The Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery and the Heritage Association of San Marcos the 4th Annual City Cemetery Tales and Tours that will be held on October 17, 2015. Tours will be 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets for the event are $10 for adults, $5 for students with children 12 and under free. Tickets are available at the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, 202 N. C.M. Allen Parkway, Main Street San Marcos Office, 317 N. LBJ Dr., First United Methodist Church 129 W Hutchison St. and the Cottage Kitchen (400 E Hopkins St) on Fridays (11 – 1) and at the gate the day of the event.
