San Marcos WIC To Host Nutrition Fair

The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program participants will be treated to a special educational event when they attend the Nutrition Fair at the San Marcos WIC clinic, 401-C Broadway St., on Thursday, March 26. The fair is being held in conjunction with National Nutrition Month, and participants will be given class education credit for their participation.

During National Nutrition Month, the USDA through WIC is encouraging people to “Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle,” aiming to encourage everyone to adopt eating and physical activity plans. The campaign is focusing attention on consuming fewer calories, making informed daily exercise in order to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, reduce the risk of chronic disease and promote overall health.

For this year’s fair, WIC will offer four classes that WIC participants can attend. Corresponding tabletop displays will give participants a visual of related information and they can take home educational materials and activities.

WIC provides supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk. WIC shares responsibility – with state and local governments, the community and parents – of ensuring that our nation’s children have access to nutritious foods they need to get a good start in life.
