SMCISD – Hernandez Cinco de Mayo Art And Artists

Hernandez Elementary students are studying history through art as they learn about the origins of historic Cinco de Mayo events.

Under the direction of art teacher Kay Posey, the students are making bright flowers to celebrate the spirit of the holiday: the Battle of Puebla which was won by the Mexican army on May 5, 1862, against the French. According to Posey, the war was fought between two hilltop forts near the city of Puebla. Army Commander Ignacio Zaragoza was instrumental in the victory.

The states of Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona celebrate Cinco de Mayo with families, friends, food, music, parades, dancing, costumes, festivals…. and flowers!
