The week of 8/27 update of short and long term lane, road closures and detours that may impact drivers along US 183 and adjacent roadways in east Austin.

Below is an overview of the 183 South project’s lane, road, and ramp closures.

Work continues along US 183, including bridge construction, roadway installation, sound wall work, utility work. All closures are weather permitting and subject to change.

US 183 South Closures & Detours •

Short Term

Lane Closure for Drainage Work: Continuously between Friday, August 24, at 9 am until Tuesday, August 28, at 3 pm, eastbound Technicenter Drive will be reduced to one lane between the US 183 northbound mainlanes and Semi Conductor Drive.

Ramp Closure for Highway Lighting: Sunday (8/26) from 6 pm to 6 am and Monday (8/27) from 8 pm to 6 am, the US 183 southbound exit ramp to MLK Jr. Blvd will be closed. Traffic will detour by exiting early at 51st Street and taking a left on Springdale Drive to access MLK Jr., Blvd.

Lane Closure for Sound Wall Construction: Monday through Friday (8/27-31) from 9 am to 3 pm, the US 183 southbound frontage road will be closed by one lane between US 290 and Manor/Springdale Road.

Ramp Closure for Bridge Construction: Monday through Tuesday (8/27-28) from 8 pm to 6 am, the US 183 southbound to SH 71 eastbound ramp will be closed. All traffic will detour by exiting for westbound SH 71, taking the u-turn at E. Riverside Drive, and heading eastbound on SH 71. Expect Delays. If traveling to the airport, plan ahead.

Ramp Closure for Paving: Monday through Wednesday (8/27-29) from 8 pm to 6 am, the US 183 northbound exit ramp to Manor/Springdale Road will be closed. Also, Purple Sage Drive will be closed at the US 183 northbound frontage road. Follow signed detours and expect delays.

Long Term

The cloverleaf ramp from SH 71 westbound to US 183 southbound will be CLOSED for 10-12 months starting as early as August 13, 2018.

Road Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously from Monday (4/16/2018) at 9 am to Monday (4/1/2019) at 5 pm, Smith Road, west of US 183, and Thurgood Avenue will be closed at the US 183 southbound mainlanes. Follow signed detours. 

Road Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously between Thursday, (6/14/2018) at 8 pm until Monday, (4/1/2019) at 5 pm, Vargas Road will be closed at US 183. Follow signed detour. 

Road Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Continuously between Thursday, (6/1/2018) at 6 am until Monday, (4/1/2019) at 6 am, Eastgate will be closed at the US 183 southbound mainlanes. Follow signed detour. 

Road Closure for Utility Work: Continuously through late December 2018, at 6 am, Tracor Lane and Marcel Gres will be closed at US 183. 

Lane Closure for Roadway Base Installation: Central Avenue and Bluestein Drive are temporarily closed at their intersections with northbound US 183 for utility work and will remain closed through 2018. Traffic is being detoured via Techni Center Drive and Semi-Conductor Drive.

Road Closure for Bridge Construction: Continuously through December 2018, Levander Loop will be closed at the US 183 northbound turnaround. Follow the signed detour. 

Ramp Closure for Bridge Construction: Beginning as early as Sunday, August 26, at 6 pm and lasting approximately 10-12 months, the SH 71 westbound exit ramp to US 183 southbound will be closed. Detour by exiting for the U-turn at E. Riverside Drive and heading eastbound on SH 71 to the US 183 southbound exit.

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) is an independent government agency created in 2002 to improve the transportation system in Williamson and Travis counties.

According to their website, their mission is “to implement innovative, multi-modal transportation solutions that reduce congestion and create transportation choices that enhance quality of life and economic vitality.”
The Mobility Authority was created and operates under the Texas Transportation Code Chapter 370 and is authorized under state law to implement a wide range of transportation systems including roadways, airports, seaports and transit services.
The Mobility Authority is authorized to issue revenue bonds to fund projects and can utilize user fees and/or taxes to fund operations and repay bonds.
