SMA Junior Elected District 2-S3 Leo Club President

Catarina Vazquez, a junior at San Marcos Academy, will have her work cut out for her this year as she takes on the role of District Leo Club President for the 1000+ students in District 2-S3.

Leo Clubs are youth organizations of Lions Club International.

Each Leo Club is sponsored by a local Lions Club to provide middle and high school students the opportunity to be partners in service. District 2-S3 includes 29 Leo Clubs from Williamson, Travis, Hays, Comal, Blanco, and Milam counties.

Vazquez was elected last year as a board member for the SMA Leo Club, which is affiliated with the San Marcos Lions. Deciding to throw her hat into the ring as a candidate for District 2-S3 president, she found out in July that her bid had been successful.

“I am very excited to get to work with students from other schools and Leo Clubs to serve our community,” Vazquez said. “The district officers had a virtual meeting recently so we could introduce ourselves and talk about our plans for this year. We discussed ideas for a service project that would be safe to do during the Coronavirus pandemic and decided to join the State Lions in their “Change the World” project, which aims to raise money for local pediatric cancer patients.”

In addition to her participation in Leo Club, Vazquez is treasurer for the Junior Class at SMA and is a member of the Academy’s Student Council, National Honor Society, Student Ambassadors, and varsity softball team. She also serves on the San Marcos Youth Commission and represented the Academy this summer at the Texas Capital Area HOBY Youth Leadership program. She is the daughter of Roland and Andrea Vazquez.

Leading a large group of students in a pandemic year will be a unique challenge, but Vazquez said she is looking forward to the opportunity.

“It’s really difficult to plan service projects that still comply with the social distancing guidelines, but we are all doing our best to stay safe while still serving the community,” Vazquez said.
