January 7 — January 11: First Week Back With Hays CISD Students At A Glance

Hays Consolidated Independent School District strives to “nurture students to become extraordinary citizens through unique, personal educational experiences through an innovative community of learners while celebrating our diversity and legacy.”
Hays CISD is home to two four-year high schools, six middle schools (6-8 grade), fourteen elementary schools, an alternative high school of choice and disciplinary center.
Hays CISD has nearly 20,000 students enrolled between its 24 campuses according to the district’s website.
Here is a quick look at what Hays CISD students and staff were up to the week of January 7 thru January 11.
On Monday, January 7, Hays CISD shared a video from KLRU TV about Hays High School senior Devin Hines. Hines was selected to be part of the PBS American Graduate series.
According to the district, Hines will graduate in June with a certification in welding, which will provide a jump start in his career.
He plans to go to college to pursue a degree in business management. The video can be viewed here.
On Wednesday, the district announced the Hays CISD Clothes Closet will have new hours in 2019. The schedule can be seen below.
Mondays & Tuesdays: 9 AM to 12 PM
Wednesdays: 9 AM to 12 PM & 4 PM to 7 PM
The new schedule will begin January 14. However, the closet will be closed on January 15, 16 and 21.
Negley Elementary School held its 2019 Spelling Bee this week. Three students received medals for their outstanding spelling skills.
Fourth-Grader Conner Frankum claimed the campus championship, following a showdown with fellow 4th-Grader Daniel Hipple (2nd place) and 3rd-Grader Lucia Neitlich (3rd place). Co-coordinators Michelle Pettit, Grace Castaneda, and Amanda Bisbey staged the fun event, with announcing and judging by County Commissioner Mark Jones, HCISD School Board Trustees Will McManus and Esperanza Orosco, and HCISD Coordinator of GT Services Tish Cawley.
Negley Principal Melody Crowther welcomed the enthusiastic crowd of families and supporters that included HCISD Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright.

Camino Real Elementary School is encouraging members of the community to participate in its upcoming 5k race on February 2. Organizers are still seeking participants and volunteers for the race.
According to the district, this year’s theme for the 5k is suicide awareness and mental health. All proceeds will benefit Officer Solis’ boys Andrew and Nate. The Kyle Police Department has set up a trust fund for the boys.
Anyone is welcome to participate, and those who can’t, can still donate to the cause. For information about the funds for the Solis family go here, and more information regarding registration and volunteer opportunities is available online.
