Austin Extends Public Comment Period For Affordable Housing Blueprint Implementation Plan

The extension provides an opportunity for Austinites to give input on aligning resources, facilitating community partnerships, and unifying strategic directions to achieve the goal of creating 60,000 affordable units over ten years for households earning less than $60,000 a year.

Comments will continue to be accepted through the City’s Neighborhood Housing and Community Development Department (NHCD) by email at NHCD@austintexas.gov or by mail at NHCD, P. O. Box 1088 Austin, Texas 78767.

Austin’s Strategic Housing Blueprint was adopted by City Council in 2017 to address the need for more affordable housing amid continued population growth. It identified five community values and 63 integrated strategies—including public policies, community partnerships, and unified strategic approaches—to guide the process, including:

• Prevent households from being priced out of Austin;
• Foster equitable, integrated, and diverse communities;
• Invest in housing for those most in need;
• Create new and affordable housing choices for all Austinites in all parts of Austin; and,
• Help Austinites reduce their household costs.

The Strategic Housing Blueprint Implementation Plan is the next phase in establishing specific actions, short-term priorities, and geographically-specific goals for implementing all 63 Strategic Housing Blueprint recommendations.

In addition, the final Implementation Plan will incorporate recommendations from several recent reports on gentrification, institutional racism, fair housing, and homelessness.
