Buda Extends Submission Deadline For Seventh Annual Short Story Contest For Adults

“We welcome any short story no longer than 4,000 words. Entries will be judged by local writers, teachers, and librarians based on the quality of the writing, creativity, originality, and story.”


The deadline submission for Buda’s Seventh Annual Short Story Writing Contest for Adults has been extended to June 16, 2018. This contest is open to non-professional writers aged 17 and up.* 

Every year the quantity and quality of the submissions goes up, so they can’t wait to read what writers have got them this year!

Story: We welcome any short story no longer than 4,000 words. Entries will be judged by local writers, teachers, and librarians based on the quality of the writing, creativity, originality, and story. 

Entry Fee: $20 (make checks or money orders payable to Friends of the Buda Library). This contest is a Friends of the Buda Library Fundraiser. All entry fees are used for library programs and materials.

Entry Deadline: Stories must be received before the library closes on June 16, 2018. 

Winner Announcements: All prize winners will be announced in June on the Friends of the Buda Library and Buda Public Library websites.  Winners will be individually notified prior to posting.

Awards: The Friends of the Buda Library will award $200 for the first place story, $100 for the second place, and $50 for the third place. In addition, the winning stories will be published on our website for all to enjoy!

Entry Guidelines:  Short story entries must be 4,000 words or less, in English, double spaced in 12-point font and submitted with entry fee to the Buda Public Library.

All entries must be unpublished and original.

Short story must include a cover page with the following information:

  • Author’s name
  • Phone number 
  • Postal address 
  • E-mail address
  • Word count

All other pages should include TITLE AND PAGE NUMBER ONLY. The author’s name and any other identifying information must not appear anywhere except on the cover page. For anonymous judging, entries will be submitted to judges by assigned number only.

Worldwide copyright on each entry remains with the author. Entry in this contest grants permission to publish the story in a book to benefit the Buda Public Library.
