Georgia Southern Takes Weekend Series From Texas State

Texas State will now head to Austin for a 6:30 p.m. bout May 1 against Texas. The Longhorns topped TXST 6-1 in San Marcos on March 27.

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State baseball team dropped a 10-7 Sunbelt Conference game against Georgia Southern Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Ballpark.

The Bobcats (22-21-1, 10-11 SBC) have now lost five of their last six weekend series, while the Eagles improved to 22-21 overall and 12-8 in league play.

TXST initially went ahead 3-0 on a home run from senior Derek Scheible in the second inning, but the home side was unable to consolidate the lead as GS equalized in the top of the third.

The Eagles plated lone tallies in the fourth and fifth frames before erupting for five markers in the top of the sixth. The Bobcats were able to answer with a four-spot in the bottom of the seventh, but they would not be able to inch any closer.

Junior Ryan Newman belted a season-high three hits, and he finished with two RBIs and a run scored. Junior Jaylen Hubbard and true freshman Dalton Shuffield both went 2-for-5, and Hubbard scored twice. Scheible and junior Jonathan Ortega both hit home runs and combined for five RBIs and two runs scored.

Junior Brandon Lewis started on the mound and took a no-decision after conceding three runs on four hits across 2.1 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Senior Cam Baird (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year after giving up four runs on six hits in 3.0 innings. Redshirt freshman Noah Walker and juniors Anthony Pagano and Seth Jordan also saw time on the hill.

Jason Swan, Mitchell Golden and Christian Avant all finished with three hits for the Eagles. Golden drove in two runs, while Swan scored twice. Chandler Corley went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Austin Thompson had a pair of RBIs and Steven Curry scored twice.

GS starter Braxton Johns made it just 1.2 innings after allowing three runs on five hits. Cole Whitney (4-1) earned the win after conceding two runs on two hits in 4.2 frames. David Johnson gave up two runs on three this in the final 2.2 innings.
