City Asks Residents to Brand Their Neighborhood

Posted by Staff

The City of San Marcos Planning and Development Services Department is asking residents to Brand their Neighborhood as part of the Code SMTX project, a rewrite of the land development code.

Free branding packets are available and being distributed to solicit input from residents that will be used as part of the Neighborhood Character Studies portion of the code rewrite. Kits may be requested by calling 512.393.8230 or emailing planning_info@sanmarcostx.gov.

“Brand Your Neighborhood is a simple, all-in-one activity kit that allows neighborhood residents to document the characteristics of their neighborhoods,” said Abby Gillfillan, Project and Permit Center Manager.  “The kits can be completed individually or as a group and will be used to provide guidance for the development codes for each neighborhood area.”

The city has been broken into six Neighborhood Character Study Groups with branding packets customized for each area. Designated neighborhood areas include: North of Campus, Western, Willow Creek, Eastern, Northern and Heritage areas. Everyone who returns a packet to the City will be entered into a drawing to win a custom San Marcos belt buckle.

Residents May Participate by:

  • Requesting a Kit – includes a Map Packet & Instructions
  • Completing the Kit – individually or as a group
  • Returning the Kit to the City by Oct. 22
  • Being entered to win a custom San Marcos belt buckle!

Citizens are also invited to offer their input at a virtual town hall online at http://sanmarcos.mindmixer.com. Questions such as “What is the most important issue facing San Marcos that should be addressed by Code SMTX” will be posed for the public to answer.

At the end of the month, the City will also be hosting a Code Rodeo – a rapid, intensive and creative work session in which residents, City staff and consultants will work together to rewrite the land development code and align it with Vision San Marcos, the City’s comprehensive master plan adopted in April 2013. A kickoff event for the Code Rodeo will be held Thursday, Oct. 23 from 6-9 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins.
