The City of Austin has been named a winner of the 2017 Digital Cities Survey by the Center for Digital Government. The City of Austin placed 8th in the largest population category.
The 17th-annual survey analyzed and ranked city governments across the country based on innovative initiatives using data and technology that seek to connect and engage with the public on vital government processes. Cities were selected that have made progress toward making local government and its relationship with citizens more transparent, efficient, and responsive.
The survey honors cities in five population classifications: 500,000 or more, 250,000 to 499,999; 125,000 to 249,999; 75,000 to 124,999 and fewer than 75,000. Austin won 8th place in the 500,000 or more population category.
In its recognition of Austin, the Center for Digital Government cited Imagine Austin, the city’s comprehensive plan for the next 30 years, and its Strategic Direction 2023 plan, adopted by City Council in April. The plan is a vision for Austin highlighted by goals for economic opportunity and affordability, mobility, safety, health, cultural and learning opportunities, and a government that works for all.
CDG also noted the work of recently hired Chief Information Officer Kevin Williams, an Air Force veteran who is now responsible for reducing the risks of the misuse of data and information while supporting the city’s open government and open data objectives.
The City was also ranked fifth in the U.S. City Open Data Census from advocacy group Open Knowledge International.
The City has spearheaded multiple open data projects, including Property Profile, a visualization of properties and development regulations, and Open Budget ATX, a data platform offering detailed information and updates on the City’s annual budget process.
The top-10 ranked cities will be honored at an awards ceremony during the National League of Cities’ annual conference in Charlotte, N.C., on November 16. Read more about the winners here.
