Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrating all living or dead American veterans, who served honorably during a time of war or peace.

The holiday, originally known as “Armistice Day,” was first celebrated on the first anniversary of the end of World War I, November 11, 1919, according to History.com.

In 1926, the United States Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance of the day; it was made a national holiday 12 years later.
