New Bypass Lanes at FM 969 Offer Free-Flow Travel
Last month, crews completed the bypass lanes at the FM 969 (MLK Jr. Boulevard) intersection, allowing drivers on the general-purpose lanes to travel under FM 969 and avoid the traffic signal.
Central Texas Regi0onal Mobility Authority (CTRMA) has seen firsthand the patience of drivers when traveling during the transition to this new configuration and are excited to see traffic flowing much better in the area around FM 969 and US 183.

When the 183 South project is complete, drivers on the non-tolled general-purpose lanes of US 183 will be able to travel through the FM 969 intersection without stopping at the signal or entering the tolled expressway.
Roadway Crossings Close As Traffic Flow Improves
In addition to completion of the bypass lanes, other significant project activity this month included permanently closing the US 183 crossings at Techni Center Drive, Central Avenue and Hudson Street.
While the ultimate configuration includes removing the northbound traffic signal at Techni Center Drive, a temporary signal is still in place to facilitate egress from the NXP campus during this interim construction configuration.
The crossing closures enhance safety and improve mobility during construction and allow for construction of the future non-tolled general-purpose lanes of US 183.
With fewer traffic lights to stop at, drivers will reach their destination faster.
And with the non-signalized “Texas” turnarounds or crossings spaced roughly a mile apart, drivers will be able to cross over US 183 safely and efficiently, and in most cases reach their destination in equal or lesser time despite a little bit of added travel distance.
Bolm Road Underpass Bridge Removed
Last month, the Bolm Road underpass bridge was removed to facilitate continued work on the new 183 South Expressway.
This work required temporarily closing the U-turns at Bolm Road.
The south to north U-turn has since been reopened to serve as a detour route for drivers who previously used the Techni Center Drive, Central Avenue or Hudson Street crossings.
In the coming months, the north to south U-turn will be reopened as well.
Towards the end of the project, both U-turns will be closed permanently, and drivers will instead use a south to north turnaround at Levander Loop and a north to south turnaround located just north of Boggy Creek.
