SAN MARCOS – On Friday, January 7, 2022, a gun was found at SMCISD Rodriguez Elementary School in San Marcos, resulting in the removal of a student from campus.

According to a letter sent to staff and parents by Rodriguez Elementary School Principal Kash Greathouse, the administration immediately notified the San Marcos Police Department. The weapon was confiscated and the student was removed from the campus.

“The student will be disciplined according to SMCISD’s student code of conduct,” Greathouse said. “We take these situations very seriously, as the safety of our students and staff is always our absolute top priority.”

San Marcos CISD Executive Director of Communications Andrew Fernandez confirmed that the gun was not loaded.

“We want our parents to understand that these situations will not be tolerated inside our school buildings,” said Fernandez. “We have to protect our students and we have to protect our staff. But it’s a joint effort. We’re asking parents to talk to their children and remind them about keeping our campus and our schools a safe place for them to learn and enjoy school, play and have fun with their friends. With situations like this, it creates a sense of urgency to protect one another even more.”

Greathouse also asks that parents take the opportunity to speak with their children about the importance of keeping the school campus a safe place.

“Our staff worked diligently through the situation presented today and I thank them for their efforts and the support provided by SMCISD administration and the San Marcos Police Department,” Greathouse said. “As a Rodriguez Family, we must continue to work together to keep our students and staff safe.”
