Local Artist’s work featured on new Street Banners

Staff Reports

SAN MARCOS – On Wednesday, September 1, the City of San Marcos installed new street banners that feature the work of a local artist. The banners are located in the downtown area and along East Hopkins Street in front of City Hall.

“It’s an honor to be chosen by the City of San Marcos for the banner project,” said artist Morgan Egan. “I have loved watching my city grow artistically and make aesthetic choices that reflect the vibrant, creative culture that we’ve always had here.”

The new banners were installed by City Transportation crews. The banners feature two floral designs that each highlight the natural beauty, vibrant colors, and rich history San Marcos has to offer.

“For these two banner designs, I imagined old textiles or bandanas, but with Texas wildflowers,” said Egan. “I was interested in the rhythm and style of these old fabric designs and wanted to see how the elements of folk-art textiles could be used to portray the specific types of flowers we have here in the Texas Hill Country.”

The new banners are the latest installment of the San Marcos Main Street Program’s placemaking initiative. The initiative aims to cultivate public spaces that are inviting to all residents, businesses, and visitors.

“We’re excited to show off the work of local artists to our community,” said Downtown Coordinator Josie Falletta. “Our goal is to make San Marcos a place that people want to live, work, and gather, and we think these banners will help do just that.”

The City regularly rotates the featured banner designs throughout the year to coincide with changing seasons or special events. Other displays highlight the work of different local artists and include reminders about keeping the river clean, nods to local school mascots, and holiday greetings.
