Job Corps is a no-cost education and career technical training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 to 24 improve the quality of their lives through career technical and academic training. The Job Corps program is authorized by Title I-C of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 (supersedes WIA 1998). The Gary Job Corps Center trains over 1400 students on its 800 acre campus in 17 vocations divided between the schools of Construction/Manufacturing and Heath & Support. Additionally, students can receive their driver license, high school diploma, or high school equivalency.
Gary Job Corps Donates To The Greater San Marcos Youth Council
Gary Job Corps staff and students donates $1060.23 and school supplies to the Greater San Marcos Youth Council.
The Gary Center has had an ongoing relationship with the Youth Shelter for over 20 years through volunteerism and fundraising. GSMYC is a resource for children and families.
In order to invest in Texas children not born to families committed to their well-being, a group of concerned citizens organized and developed the Greater San Marcos Youth Council in 1986 to provide shelter to maltreated children and support services to families.
Pictured giving a $500.00 check to Nena Meadows, GSMYC, is Gary Center Director Patti Lankford, saying “We have enjoyed our partnership with the Youth Shelter over the years, we appreciate the staff that help the youth less fortunate, we will always be there in whatever the needs will be.”
Gary Job Corps Volunteers at Kyle “Pie in the Sky” Hot Air Balloon Festival
The Kyle “Pie in the Sky” is the premiere hot air balloon event in the Texas Hill Country. It takes place in the Pie Capital of Texas. With 25 beautiful balloons, including the Wells Fargo special shape, “Center Stage”, the event promises that you will be delighted and awed.
Thousands are expected to be entertained by the great live music by Stoney LaRue, Jack Ingram, The Imperial Starlighters, Django Walker, Dirty River Boys, Prophets and the Outlaws, and Mike and the Moonpies.
Additionally, there will be a pie eating contest and information booth by the event sponsors.
The Gary Job Corps Security Cadets will be directing traffic and assisting with crowd control for the entire event, this will be the 2nd year that the cadets have assisted the city of Kyle.
Gary Job Corps Overhead Line Trade interns with San Marcos Electric Utility and Security Cadets ride along with Hays Constables
The Gary Job Corps Center utilizes many local businesses to participate as intern sites in furthering the education of Gary Trainees as they become employment ready. Overhead Lines Trainees are paired up with San Marcos Electric Utility employees, assist with service calls and perform preventive maintenance on existing structures.
Security Cadets ride along with Hays Constables Precinct 1 and 2, they shadow in stops, delivering eviction notices, delivery documents to Government Center and directing traffic during funeral services.
Gary Job Corps volunteers at San Marcos Business Expo
Gary Job Corps students and staff have participated and assisted with the set up at the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce Business to Business Expo for the last 19 years. Over 100 exhibitors participated as 1,000’s visitors enjoyed the festivities.
Students from the Gary Center have assisted in numerous community projects, golf tournaments, health fairs, business expos, food drives, school supply drives, parades and fund raisers.
